The Composer in Grey

Biography

Originally from Wisconsin, I first started learning to play the violin in elementary school with my school orchestra. I'd continue to play for my school orchestras all the way through college.

When I was about 11, I started to take private piano lessons. It was there where I first started to experiment with music theory and improv; however, it wasn't until my freshmen year in high school before I actually began to compose. Our orchestra (just freshmen) was broken into small teams and given the task to write a song. My partner and I wrote a 4 minute long piano piece harkening back to the silent movies age. Alas, I wouldn't write my next piece until college.

In college, I found myself surrounded by a very stressful environment (by design). One evening, I was particularly bored and downloaded Musescore. After a couple hours, I realized that I was enjoying composing again. For the next two years, it was a diversionary habit of mine that I did not really share with anybody.

My junior year, I lived in a single room with two of my closest friends. Composing could not be a secret hobby in such an intimate space. Their encouragement and support pushed me to start educating myself on compositional theory and write more frequently. Additionally, it helped me to share my music with the world even as I seek to develop and improve in my skills.
